Dutch Chicken: Characteristics, Temperament and Breed Information

The Dutch Chicken is a heavy, dual-purpose breed. This is a fairly rare large breed of chickens originating in the United States. Contrary to its name, Dutch chicken was actually raised on Rutgers farms in New Jersey in the 1930s.

Birds imported from Holland are crossed with White Leghorns, Rhode Island Reds, New Hampshires and Lamonas resulting in a White Dutch Chicken.

Another cross that included White Leghorns, Plymouth Trained Breeds, Australorps and Brown Leghorns resulted in the Trained variety of this breed of chicken.

The breed was bred as an excellent dual-purpose poultry breed at a time when white eggs were rare and popular in the United States. It is currently a very rare breed and availability may be limited. But they are excellent white laying eggs and excellent domestic breeds.

The Dutch Chicken was included in the American Poultry Association’s Standard of Excellence in 1949. The breed is now listed as Critical on the Conservation Priority List of American Livestock Breeds. There is a slimmed down version of this breed of chicken.

Characteristics of Dutch Chicken

It is a medium sized, heavy chicken with a meaty carcass. It has a medium-large build and a single bright red comb with six well-defined tips. Races and earlobes are red. There are two varieties of this breed; Striped and white.

The skin color of the white Dutch chicken is white. And in the Barred variety, the skin and legs are yellow. Standard sized roosters weigh around 3.9 kg and hens around 3 kg.

Behaviour/Temperament

The Dutch chicken is a docile breed that can be adapted to almost any environment. They have a cheerful nature and, when available, are an excellent choice for your backyard or backyard chicken collection.

She is a very good laying white egg and tolerates cold well. They are calm, friendly and very winter hardy. They are excellent collectors and also tolerate confinement well. The hens will be broody, they will be good passers and mothers.

Dutch chickens grow slowly compared to other heavy poultry breeds. But their ability to source their own food compensates for this small disadvantage.
