Charolle sheep: characteristics, origins, uses and information about the breed

The Charolais sheep is a breed of domestic sheep originating in France. It comes from the center-east of the country (Charolais and Saône-et-Loire), in the same region where Charolais cattle developed.

The breed was bred in the early 1800s. And it was developed based on crossing the Leicester longhaired sheep with local land sheep breeds.

The Charolais sheep breed is mainly used as a final bull to increase the musculature and growth rate of lambs. Rams usually reach maturity at 7-8 months of age.

Charolais sheep are the second most popular end-producer in the UK.

Characteristics of the Charolle sheep

Charolais sheep are a large breed of domestic sheep. They are usually white with a pinkish brown head. Their head is usually furless, but may be covered in fine, pale hair.

The body of the Charolais sheep is long in the back, wedge-shaped and muscular. In addition, they are animals with excellent bones and a high percentage of meat.

The legs of these animals are brown, rather short and usually hairless. Usually rams and ewes are polled.

Charolais sheep are hardy animals well adapted to their natural climate. They are also doing well in other parts of the world.

Today, the breed is grown primarily for meat production. But also good for wool production. Their fleece usually weighs between 2 and 2.5 kg.

The fleece has a base length of 1.6 to 2.4 inches. The wool is of good quality, its size is 56 to 60 Bradford, and the diameter of the fibers is 29 to 30.5 microns.

Charolla sheep are very prolific and have a long breeding season. The average lambing rate in December is around 180% and in February it is around 200%.

Ease of lambing means minimal stress for ewes and lambs, as well as a strong suckling lamb. Ewes can be bred at around 7 months of age and lambs usually grow rapidly.
