Jaharana Goat: Characteristics, Use, and Complete Breed Information

The Jaharana goat (also spelled Jakrana or Jahrana) is a breed of dairy goat that is raised primarily for milk production. It is an important breed of dairy goat in the semi-arid region of Rajasthan, India.

The breed was named after the village where these goats live. The Jaharana goat is distributed in a limited area and the total population is small. These pure goats are mostly concentrated around Jahrana Behror tehsil village of Alwar district in the state of Rajasthan.

The real habitat of this breed is a small village in the Aravali mountain ranges. Today, this goat breed is mainly used for milk production. But Jaharan goats are also good for meat production and their skins are popular in the leather industry. Learn more about this breed of goats below.

Characteristics of the jaharana goat

The Jaharana goat is a medium to large sized animal with a compact body. It looks a lot like the Beetal Goat, but the Jakharana Goat is longer. Their color is black with white spots on the ears and muzzle. Their face is straight, their forehead is raised.

They have a short, shiny coat. Males and bucks usually have small horns. Their horns are short, stubby, pointing upwards and backwards. Jaharana goats have leafy, pendulous ears. And their ears are of medium length.

Jakharana’s udder is large, well developed, with long conical teats. The average size of an adult deer is 84 cm, females 77 cm.
