Garganica goat: characteristics, use and complete information about the breed

The Garganitsa goat is a very beautiful breed of domestic goat, which is bred mainly for the production of milk and meat. He is from Cape Gargano in the Puglia region of southern Italy.

The Garganika goat breed comes from the crossing of local animals with goats imported from Western Europe. It was probably born at the same time as the introduction of the merino sheep, which led to the formation of the Gentile di Puglia sheep breed.

The Garganica goat originated in Gargano and from there spread to other parts of Puglia and neighboring regions.

This breed is one of the eight native Italian goat breeds for which a pedigree book is kept. National Cattle Association, Italian National Association of Sheep Breeders. In 1976 the breed standard was approved.

In recent years, the number of this breed has decreased sharply. In 1870, there were 18,000 goats available at 33,725, and by 2002 the number had fallen to 18,000. And in 1870, the conservation status of the Garganika goat was recognized by the FAO as “on the way to disappearance”.

Characteristics of goat garganica

The Garganica goat is a very beautiful medium-sized animal. Their coat is mostly shiny black with reddish highlights. The male and the horns are present.

The heads of Garganica goats are quite small, and adults have long straight black or dark brown hair. Males are larger than females. Children’s skin is valued for their curly raven hair.
