Pig breeds: the best breeds for pig farming

There are hundreds of different breeds of domestic pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus) around the world.

The current breed of pigs is a breed of pigs that has a given set of biological and physical characteristics. There are also several breeds available that are found in the wild. And some breeds have been selected to meet the needs of farmers, called crosses, hybrids or improved breeds.

Pig farmers have bred a variety of breeds suitable for modern animal husbandry, just as sheep and cows have been bred over time to achieve certain shapes, sizes, colors, or temperaments. Crossbreeds usually have parents from two or more different breeds.

On the other hand, purebred pigs are the animals descended from parents of the same breed or variety. Most breeds of pigs we know today are thought to be descended from the Eurasian wild boar (Sus scrofa).

According to archaeological evidence from the Near East, the domestication of pg occurred as early as 9,000 years ago. There is evidence of even earlier domestication in China. Figurines, as well as bones, dating from the sixth or seventh millennium BC. have been found at sites in the Middle East.

Pigs were also a popular figurine subject in ancient Persia. Originally most cattle were used by normal people, pigs are more indicative of a settled farming community.

The reason for this is simply that pigs are difficult to round up and travel long distances. Pigs have become vital to the economy of some parts of the world.

For example, in New Guinea there is a “pig farm” as strong and complex as any African cattle-based culture.

Today, pig farming has become popular all over the world and many breeds are available for various purposes. However, here we have listed some breeds of pigs bred and popular around the world.
