The Sussex Spotted Chicken is a dual-purpose breed developed in Sussex, England in the early 19th century. Now this breed of chickens is popular in many countries.
Sussex chickens come in a variety of colors and are a lightweight version (about 1/4 of the original). Bred primarily as a table bird. But now it’s a dual-purpose breed, suitable for both meat and egg production.
Characteristics of the speckled chicken Sussex
The Sussex variegated chicken is known as a table bird. Ideal for fattening, they have pinkish-white skin and a long, deep body. In the heavy chick class, they are medium in size.
Sussex spotted hens lay light brown or colored eggs. Their plumage is a rich mahogany ground color with individual feathers ending in a white tip separated from the rest of the feathers by a black stripe. What pleases the eye.
Spotted Sussex chicks vary greatly in color, from dark brown to creamy yellow, and some chicks also have alternating light and dark stripes along their backs.
The Pied Sussex chicken combines beauty and utility and is very well suited for dual purpose and display. This breed can weigh around 7 to 8 pounds.
Behaviour/Temperament
Motley Sussex chickens are curious, friendly and above all sweet. This chicken breed tends to be more individualistic than some other breeds. They are robust and the hens can incubate.
