Surti Goat: Characteristics, Uses, and Complete Breed Information

The Surti goat is an important breed of domestic goat in India. It is a breed of dairy goat that is bred primarily for milk production. The Surti goat is one of the best dairy goat breeds in India.

The name of the breed comes from a place called ‘letter‘in the state of Gujarat in India. This breed is found in its purest form in this area. But the overall population of this breed is very small compared to other breeds of goats. And it is one of the endangered goat breeds of Indian origin.

The breed is very popular in their native regions, they are bred and kept in small herds of 2 to 15 goats. Most herds are raised on an extensive grazing system. But some animals are kept under intensive conditions and fed in a barn.

Characteristics of the goat goat

Surti goats are small to medium sized animals with a compact body. Their coat is mostly white with short, shiny hairs. They have medium sized hanging ears. Their forehead is convex and the profile of the face is slightly raised.

Males and bucks usually have medium-sized horns. Their horns point upwards and backwards. The udder of females is well developed, with large conical teats. They have relatively short legs and are generally unable to walk long distances.

Special Considerations

The Surti goat is an excellent dairy goat compared to other Indian goat breeds. It is the most economical to grow, as it can live on leaves or food scraps.

Females are excellent milk producers and can produce on average between 2.0 and 2.25 kg of milk per day when fed in a stall with complementary feed. But in the conditions of a village with keeping goats on pasture, they can produce about 1.2 kg of milk per day.
