Charmois sheep: characteristics, origin, use and information on the breed

Charmoise sheep are domestic sheep bred primarily for meat production. He was born in France in the middle of the 19th century.

The breed was actually bred in central France (Loire et Cher). It was created by crossing Romney sheep imported from the UK with sheep from local sheep breeds such as Merino, Berrichon and Saltfoot.

The Charmoise sheep breed has been used in the production of the latest continental sheep breeds such as Charolais and Rouge.

It’s a real rock, the first brought to the UK from the Continent.

Characteristics of the Charmois sheep

Charmoise sheep are medium-sized animals. They are white or plain. Usually rams and sheep are polled, that is, they have no horns.

The average height of sexually mature ewes is about 60 cm at the withers and that of rams about 65 cm.
