Old German cultural pigeon: characteristics and information about the breed

The Old German Cropper is an ancient breed of domestic pigeon originating from Germany and Hungary.

He is known as Swollen Old German in its region of origin, and the breed has actually developed over many years of selective breeding.

This breed and all other varieties of domestic pigeons are descendants of the Rock Dove. It is such an old breed that some believe it to be as old as the Old Holland Pouter.

The Old German Pigeon is said to resemble the Hungarian Giant Bird and probably dates back to a common origin.

Currently, the breed is bred primarily for show purposes. And it is available for some other countries outside its home region. Learn more about the breed below.

Appearance of the Old German Pigeon

The Old German Cropper pigeon is a great breed. It is a very beautiful breed and the longest of all domestic pigeons. He has a large, well-inflated oval-to-round balloon.

These birds typically stand with the front of the body elevated in a semi-upright position, with the rest of the body held close to and parallel to the ground.

They have very long wings which should ideally extend beyond the tail. They must be tightly closed and free from the “veiling effect” caused by the bulging of the secondary feathers which disturbs the smooth line of the wing.

The legs of the old German dove are rather short, showing no bird’s thighs covered with frame feathers.

The breed is available in black, white, brown, cream, red, yellow, silver, mealy, blue, as well as checkerboard and lark. These birds are monochromatic, but can also be found in bursts or a random mix of white and colored feathers.

The average live weight of adult birds of a large breed is 700-750 grams. Photo of Fall’s pigeons and information from Wikipedia.
