Western Red Sheep: Breed Characteristics and Information

The Rouge de l’Ouest sheep are a breed of domestic sheep originating in France. It is also known as Maine red headand the name of this breed is literally translated from French as “west redwhich refers to his region of origin and his unique rosy face and legs.

The breed was bred in the French department of Maine et Loire. And it was developed by crossing local breeds of Landrace sheep with Wensleydales and Bluefaced Leicesters.

It is of the same line as the Bleu du Maine, but with a distinctive pink face and legs. The French register of Rouge de l’Ouest sheep was established in 1968 and the British register in 1986. Read more about this breed of sheep below.

Characteristics of the Western Red Sheep
