Meatmaster Sheep: Characteristics, Uses, and Breed Information

The Mitmaster sheep is a breed of domestic sheep from South Africa. It was bred from different breeds of woolly sheep in the early 1990s.

It was created from goat to improve the meat characteristics of African breeds of fat-tailed sheep. Endurance and aptitude for life in the desert are the main virtues of the fat-tailed sheep.

But these animals matured slowly, had poor fat distribution, and lacked the hind limb musculature of European sheep breeds.

Mitmaster sheep increased their muscle mass and distributed fat better.

But he retained the coat (not wool) and other desirable traits such as a good flocking instinct and resistance to tick diseases. When the Meatmaster mutton was developed and tested, the demand was established.

The breed registry was established around 2000, it was registered in 2007, and a breeding society was established the following year.

Today, Meatmaster pedigrees can consist of any number of breeds such as Van Rooy or South African Merino, but must include breeding Damar. Learn more about this breed below.
