Ameraucana Chicken: Characteristics, Temperament, and Breed Information

The Ameraucana chicken is an American domestic chicken breed that originated in the United States in the 1970s. This breed was developed by several people who were trying to standardize the Araucan breed.

Ameraucana was bred from chickens from a South American country (Chile) that carried the blue egg gene. It was bred to preserve the breed’s blue eggs while eliminating the deadly recessive gene.

In 1976 a breeders’ club was founded, now called the Ameraucana Breeders’ Club. There is also a variant of chicken ameraucana in bantam.

Characteristics of Chicken Ameraucana

The Ameraucana hen lays blue colored eggs. And this is one of the breeds of chickens that lay blue eggs. Ameraucana chickens may resemble Araucan chickens. The main similarity is the pea scallop gene and the blue egg gene.

Araucanas do not wrinkle and have earmuffs. And the ameraucana chicken has a bearded, blunt tail. Piglets of this breed of chickens are small or absent, the earlobes are small and round. The color of the comb, earlobes and earrings is red.

The hocks are slate blue, tending towards black in the Black variety. The Ameraucana breed of chicken is considered a variety of Araucan in the UK and Australia. On average, a standard ameraucana male weighs about 3 kg and a female about 2.5 kg. And the male and female of the bantam variety weigh from 740 to 850 g.

Ameraucana hens lay eggs in different shades of blue. The recognized colors of the Ameraucana chicken are black, blue, wheat blue, red brown, buff, silver, wheat, and white.
