Holistan sheep: characteristics, origin, use and breed information

The Cholistan sheep is a breed of domestic sheep originating in Pakistan. It is mainly found in parts of Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur and Rahim Yar Khan districts and Cholistan tract in Punjab province.

Suitable for both wool production and meat production. But it is grown mainly for meat production in its region of origin.

The total number of Holistan sheep decreased from 1986 to 1996. The total flock decreased from 275,964 to 33,025 respectively.

Characteristics of the Holistan Sheep

Cholistan sheep are medium-sized animals. They are mostly white in color with a black to brown head and ears. They have small, short ears with a long tail.

The average height of an adult ram is about 75 cm at the withers and that of a ewe about 66 cm.

The average live weight of adult Cholistan rams is about 48.5 kg. And the average live weight of a sexually mature sheep is about 34 kg. Photos and information from Wikipedia.

Advantages

Sheep in Cholistan are raised primarily for meat production in their native region. But it’s not bad for wool production either.

Cholistan sheep are very hardy and strong animals, and they are well adapted to the local habitat.

They are grown primarily for meat production, but they are also good for wool production. The sheep are good mothers, with an average litter of 1.05 lambs.

They are also quite good at milk production and provide enough milk for their lambs. Ewes produce on average about 45 kg of milk with an average lactation cycle of 110 days.
