Heavenly Eye goldfish: characteristics, feeding, breeding and use

The Sky Eye Goldfish is a bizarre goldfish that has a pair of race-sensing telescope eyes that face upwards with pupils looking up at the sky.

It is a two-tailed breed, also known as the Choten Gan and Astrologer. These fish first appeared as a direct mutation of the telescope goldfish in the 18th century.

Competing traditions claim exactly where it happened first, in Korea or China.

The first proof of the existence of celestials appears on the Hnez scroll of 1772, which depicts a goldfish without a dorsal fin and bulging eyes.

Until 1903 (when 30 specimens arrived from China and became the basis of Japanese breeders), Heaven’s Eye goldfish did not reach Japan. But Japan quickly became the top producer of Celestial Eye goldfish for export.

After World War II and since, most Sky’s Eye goldfish exported from Asia are of Chinese origin.

And the Celestial is depicted on a postage stamp issued in 1960 by the People’s Republic of China. However, read below for more information on this variety of goldfish.

Characteristics of the Heavenly Eye goldfish

The celestial eye goldfish is similar in appearance to the bubble eye goldfish. They have an elongated ovoid body and no dorsal fin.

The coccyx may be half the length of the body. Paired fins are Fantail or Ryukin type.

When colored, these fish can usually be seen with colored metallic scales in shades of orange, white, or red-white.

They are also known with nacre scales, but rarely. When young, they have normal eyes, but they begin to protrude and inverted versions develop.

The average body length of a mature Heavenly Eye goldfish is around 5 to 6 inches. Photos and information from Wikipedia.

Diet

The Heavenly Eye Goldfish will eat almost any type of food. They can eat all kinds of frozen, fresh, and flaky foods.

reproduction

Both male and female Skyeye goldfish are easily identifiable during breeding season. In males, white tubercles form on the gill plates and pectoral fins.

It is difficult for males to find females, mainly because of their upturned eyes. Thus, keeping a large number of males for each female in the aquarium can aid in breeding.

It is also a good idea to keep the breeding tank empty. And also limit the availability of shelters for women.

Advantages

The Skyeye goldfish is an ornamental fish. They are mainly raised as pets.

Special Notes

Skyeye goldfish are active and agile swimmers despite their limited vision and lack of a dorsal fin.

They require special care and management and are not recommended for beginners. They are best kept with other visually impaired breeds or in their own aquarium.

They are less resistant to poor water quality than other varieties of goldfish and are prone to disease.

The average lifespan of this goldfish is 10 to 15 years. But sometimes they can live longer. However, check out the full breed profile of these fish in the following table.
