Easter Egg Chicken: Traits, Temperament, and Breed Information

The Easter Egger chicken is not a breed of chicken. This is a variety of chicken that does not meet any of the breed standards defined by the American Poultry Association standards.

In fact, any hen that has the blue egg gene but does not fully meet breed standards is an Easter egg hen.

This breed of chick produces medium to large sized eggs ranging from blue to green, olive to navy blue and sometimes even pink.

The name “Easter Eggs” comes from the resemblance of their colored eggs to Easter eggs. They are bred primarily for their colored eggs, but are also large enough to be used for meat production.

Characteristics of Easter egg chicken

Easter Egger chickens belong to the Ameraucana and Araucan chicken breeds. Then crossed with many different breeds so that they no longer meet the standards of any of those breeds. Chicken Easter eggs, like eggs, vary greatly in color and size.

They usually have scallops and pea sleeves, but come in almost all varieties and colors. Some chicks even have ear tufts or don’t wrinkle. Although every Easter egg chick is different, they are generally smaller than chicks that lay blue, green, or pink eggs.

On average, Easter Egger roosters weigh about 5 pounds and hens about 4 pounds.

Behaviour/Temperament

Easter egg chicks are exceptionally friendly and hardy. They can thrive in hot and cold weather. In general, they are generally friendly with people and children. They are therefore an excellent choice for a vegetable garden or a family herd. Hens are also good laying hens. See the full breed profile below.
