Frizzle Chicken: Characteristics, Temperament and Breed Information

The Frizzle Chick is a dual-purpose breed with the main characteristics of curly or curly plumage. This is a truly unique breed of chickens.

Unlike most other chickens, the Frizzle hen’s plumage curves outward and forward, giving the appearance that it has walked backwards through a strong wind.

But Frizzle chickens are not considered a breed in the United States and are judged at shows according to the standards of the breed to which they belong. The breed is now popular as a dual purpose breed and is also very popular for shows.

Frizzle chickens come in a wide variety of colors and share some of the characteristics of a Cochin chicken. It is a heavy breed, about the size of a Plymouth Rock chicken. There is also a slimmed down version of this breed of chicken.

Characteristics of Chicken Frizz

The Frizzle Chicken is an upright breed with a short, broad body and a round, full breast. Each Frizzle feather is moderately long and curves towards the bird’s head. And each individual feather has a rather ragged appearance, and there are many curled feathers on the neck.

They have no leg feathers. They have long wings and large erect tails. The Frizzle hen comes in several colors and three types of plumage.

Plumage types: curly, more curly and flat. All varieties have red eyes, a single medium-sized red comb, and red earlobes. They have bright red earrings. The color of the legs varies with the different Frizzle Chicken color options.

Usually, curl feet are darker in darker feathered birds. The color of the beak also matches the color of the feather. The black and red, black, blue, corn or shiny varieties have a white beak. The pyle, red, white, buff, and Colombian varieties have yellow beaks.

Behaviour/Temperament

The Frizzle Chicken is a very hardy, fast-growing breed of poultry. It is a gentle breed and the hens are good layers. Hens lay medium-sized colored or white eggs, and they are often incubated.

Frizzle chickens are a heavy breed. And they are often considered show birds, but they also make good table birds. It is an excellent dual-purpose breed that is suitable for both meat and egg production.

They are excellent foragers and are perfect for free range or outdoor enclosures. They also tolerate imprisonment well. Frizzle hatchlings normally appear feathered. But their wing feathers begin to grow and soon turn outward.
