Herigarh cattle: characteristics and information about the complete breed

Herigarh cattle are a breed of draft cattle. It is a breed of cattle native to India, bred in the Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh.

The breed’s main breeding area includes the Heri area, and several animals also live in the adjacent Pilibhit area. And the breed was named after the region or village called ‘Herigah“.

Herigarh cattle are also known by other names such as Heri, Harigarh and Hari. They are closely related to the Malvi cattle breed.

Although the formation of the horns is typical of the Lyrohorn Malvi, the animals of this breed are generally much lighter than the Malvis.

Characteristics of Herigarh Cattle

Herigarh cattle are relatively smaller animals. They are usually white or gray in color with a small, narrow face. Bulls and cows usually have horns.

And their horns are thin and protruding. Bulls have relatively large horns ranging from 1 to 1.5 feet. And cows have smaller horns than bulls.

The ears of Herigarh cattle are small, with shining eyes. They have a short neck that looks mighty. Bulls have a well-developed hump, while cows have relatively small ones.

Herigarh cattle are thin and transparent, starting just below the chin and continuing to the chest.

They have a wide and deep trunk, a moderately tight and short sheath. They have a long tail ending in a white arrowhead and strong limbs. Cows have a small udder that hugs the body perfectly.

Herigarh cattle are smaller in size but very active and hardy relative to body size. They are excellent pastures and can only thrive on grazing.

Bulls are very good for light pulling and also good for quick and easy carrying. They become fit for work at the age of 4 years. It is claimed that oxen can carry about 1.5 tons of goods in a cart at a speed of 3-4 miles per hour and a distance of 30-35 miles per day.

The cows are poor milkers and their milk yields vary from 300 to 500 kg per lactation.
