Chicken Cochin: Characteristics, Temperament and Breed Information

The Cochin chicken is a breed of Asian domestic chicken. They were introduced from China in the early 1850s. And Kochi chickens are popular and known around the world as big, friendly balls of down and feathers.

As a very distinctive breed of chicken, Cochin chickens have become very popular with poultry enthusiasts in the English-speaking world. This breed of chickens is one of the largest existing today.

Cochin chickens were recognized by the American Poultry Association in 1874. Below we have discussed the breed’s characteristics, behavior and general profile.

Physical Characteristics of Cochin Chicken

Cochinchin chickens are among the largest domestic chickens. The most distinctive feature of the feline is the excessive plumage that covers the legs and feet. They have yellow skin under their feathers. They lay medium-sized light brown eggs.

They lay a lot of eggs, but usually not for long. Cochinchin chickens come in a wide variety of colors. Black, fawn, blue, gold, partridge, red, splash, silver, and white are the color variations of Cochin chickens. They can be curled and the feathers twist outward.

Cochin hens are known to be very good mothers. Even as adoptive mothers for other breeds of chickens. Kohinya chickens are calm by nature and very friendly. They are also very good as pets.

On average, a Cochin chicken can weigh about 5 kg and a female about 4 kg. They have a comb, and there is also a lighter version of this chicken breed.

Behaviour/Temperament

Cochin chickens are relatively lazy than chickens of other breeds. Their lazy lifestyle and plump appearance are detrimental to their health. And they tend to suffer from metabolic and heart problems.

They like to stay on short grass and usually don’t come out on longer vegetation. Because a longer growing season can damage the leg feathers. They take up very little space compared to their large size.

They usually prefer to fence them in, but don’t put them in the cold. A fence 2 to 3 feet long will suffice to contain them, as they do not fly. But you also have to worry about predators.

Cochin chickens are very friendly, calm and maternal in nature. That’s why they make great thoughtful people. They are not among the good layers. They lay eggs of medium size, but few in number. The eggs take 22 days to hatch and the chicks are quite hardy.

Cochin chickens tend to be submissive when kept with other aggressive chicken breeds. They need good quality food and take a long time to mature. They usually mature in two years. They are also very good as pets and live an average of 8 to 10 years.
