Tiroler Steinschaf sheep: characteristics and information about the breed

The Tyroler Steinschaf sheep is a breed of domestic sheep from Austria. It is also known as Tyrolean rock sheep and it’s actually mountainous Tyrol in Austria.

Although in Italy several animals are also bred. The breed is mainly cultivated in the states of Tyrol and Salzburg in Austria and in the autonomous province of Bolzano in Italy.

The Tiroler Steinschaf sheep is one of 42 local indigenous sheep breeds with limited distribution, whose herd book is kept by the Association Nazionale della Pastorizia.

Characteristics of the Tiroler Steinschaf sheep

The Tiroler Steinschaf sheep is a medium to large sized animal with a good appearance. Coat color can be gray, black or white. And the face is usually black.

The original animals have very hard hooves supported by very thin but strong legs. Their head is relatively small and their nose is straight.

Their ears are short and pointed, while their tail is long and thin. The ram and the sheep usually have horns.
