Broad-breasted White Turkey: Characteristics, Uses, and Breed Information

The broad-breasted white turkey is a breed of domesticated turkey from the United States. It is the most commercially used domestic meat turkey.

The breed was actually bred by crossing the Dutch white turkey and the broad-breasted bronze turkey. And it has become the dominant breed of turkey on the market. This breed is familiar to most Americans.

Prior to the breed’s introduction, the broad-breasted bronze breed dominated the turkey market. But people started to prefer the broad-breasted white turkey in the early 1960s.

Breeders began to favor this breed as it produced a cleaner looking carcass.

The white turkey as a whole was included in the American Poultry Association’s Standard of Excellence in 1874. Learn more about this breed of domestic turkey below.
