The Rosecomb chicken is one of the oldest breeds of the Bantam breed, so named because of its distinctive crest. This is one of the real dwarf chicken breeds, not a miniature version of the large birds. He hails from the UK, but very little history is known about the breed.
The Rosecomb breed of chicken was developed by English breeders and has been known since at least the 1400s. The breed first gained popularity after being preserved by King Richard III during his reign in the 15th century. And it is not known exactly when this breed arrived in America.
Currently, the rosecomb chicken is grown primarily as an ornamental breed. And today he is still popular among fans. The Rosecomb chicken was included in the American Poultry Association’s Standard of Excellence in 1874.
Characteristics of Rosecomb Chicken
The Rosecomb Chicken has a solid build. Its large tail is carried perpendicular to its back, which creates a beautiful appearance. Rosecombs have a large pink comb for which they are named, with striking white earlobes and beards. The crest is large compared to the overall size of its body. Combs and earrings are bright red.
Rosecomb roosters have long crescent-shaped tail feathers and their legs are slate blue, long and graceful. The wings point down so the tips almost reach the ground, and the back is a long, elegant curve from neck to tail. There are many colored varieties of Rosecomb hen, about 25 color varieties.
While the American Poultry Association only recognizes three; Black, blue and white. But the American Bantam Association recognizes more varieties.
All colored varieties of Rosecomb Chicken have standard plumage with white earlobes, bright red crests, muzzle and barbs. Their legs are black in the Black variety, white with a pink tint in the White variety and bluish gray in the Blue variety. The eyes are usually brown in black-tipped birds and red in white-tipped ones.
Some common color varieties of Rosecomb chickens are: Blue, White, Black, Splash, Black Breast Red, Blue Red, Copper Red, Brown Red, Lemon Blue, Spotted, Pyle Red, Wheat, etc. Rosecomb roosters weigh around 0.57 to 0.62 kg. and chickens about 0.45-0.51 kg.
Behaviour/Temperament
Rosecomb hens tend to be hardy, active birds. They are generally friendly and easy to handle, but roosters can be aggressive. Unlike most chickens, Rosecombs are good flyers. The hens are not good laying hens and lay a small number of small white eggs. And they are not thought out. The chicks mature slowly and need special care.
