Turopol pig: characteristics, origin and information about the breed

Pig Turopolje is a breed of domestic pig from Croatia. He was named after Turopol, Croatia, where he is from. It is also known as Croatian: Turopol Pig.

Currently, it is a very rare breed that is on the verge of extinction. The breed is one of the oldest European pig breeds. Although it may have had infusions from Berkshire or other bloodlines in the 19th century.

The Turopolje pig breed was once one of the most widespread pig breeds in Croatia. But the shift from extensive pig production to intensive production in the mid-20th century prevented the use of the breed.

It is believed to be a Siska breed, which later spread throughout the Balkan Peninsula.

The breed is also believed to be the result of crossing Siska with Krskopolski from neighboring Slovenia. Learn more about the breed below.
