Komizan sheep: characteristics, origin, use and breed information

Comisana sheep are a breed of domesticated sheep from Italy. It is native to central and northern Sicily, Italy.

The breed is also known by other names such as red face, Lentien, red head and ginger. The name of the breed comes from the municipality of Comiso in the province of Ragusa.

The exact origin of the Komizan sheep is unknown. But it is a southern Mediterranean breed found mainly in the provinces of Enna, Caltanissetta and Palermo.

But they are also available in some other Italian provinces and have also been exported to other Mediterranean countries.

It probably originated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries from the Maltese and Sicilian breeds of sheep.

The Comisana sheep is one of the 17 native Italian sheep breeds whose pedigree book is kept by the Associazione Nazionale della Pastorizia.

The Associazione Nazionale della Pastoriza is the Italian national association of sheep breeders. The breed herd book was created in 1976.

The total population of this breed at 350,000 was estimated in 1983 at 64,500 individuals, of which about 64,500 were registered in the stud book.

Characteristics of the Comisana sheep

Komisan sheep are medium to large sized animals. They are usually completely white in color and the face is brick red with a white stripe down the front. They have semi-dry ears, and rams and ewes are usually polled.

Medium and large adult ewes have an average height of about 70 cm at the withers and about 80 cm in rams.

Adult Komizan rams weigh about 80 kg on average. And the average live weight of sexually mature ewes is about 50 kg. Photos and information from Wikipedia.

Advantages

The Komizan sheep is actually a triple purpose animal. But today it is mainly bred as a dairy breed of sheep in its native region for milk production.

The Komisana sheep is a very hardy and productive breed of domestic sheep.

It is highly valued for its high dairy production, which is processed locally to produce a variety of high quality artisan cheeses according to a millennial tradition.

The average milk production of Comisana ewes is around 200 liters per lactation. Their milk is of fairly good quality, containing about 6.5% fat and about 5.2% protein.

Komisan lambs are also well suited for meat production. And lambs are usually slaughtered when they are about a month old, when they reach 9-10 kg.

Komizan sheep are also well suited for wool production. Sheep produce an average of about 1.3 kg of wool, and rams – about 2.5 kg.
