Australian Sheep: Characteristics, Origins, Uses and Breed Information

Australian sheep are a breed of domestic sheep raised in Australia. Today it is mainly distributed in New South Wales, Victoria.

It was developed in the early 1990s using Southdown and Texel genetics. And the resulting offspring has a maximum of 75% Southdown and Texel pedigree.

Today, Australian sheep are primarily bred as first class lamb producers by crossing them with purebred or crossbred sheep.

Characteristics of the Australian Sheep

Australian sheep are large animals. They are usually completely white in color with a white face. Usually rams and ewes are polled. Their face is clean and their body is simple.

They require less maintenance and are very easy to maintain. Today, the breed is grown primarily for meat production.

But they are also very good for the production of wool. They produce fairly good quality wool with a fiber diameter of 28 to 33 microns.

The length of the polar fiber is 60 to 90 micrometers. Average fleece production is 3-5 kg.
