Angel-tailed pig: characteristics and information about the breed

The Angel Saddle Pig is a rare breed of domestic pig raised primarily in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is also known as fishing pig in the saddle and Danish: fishing pig in the saddle.

It was created in Angeln, Germany. The breed was developed by crossing a local German black and white Landrace pig with a Wessex Saddleback pig.

In 1937 the breed became a separate and independent breed in Schleswig-Holstein. By the 1950s, the company had taken a large share of the local market.

The Angeln Saddleback pig breed has all but disappeared in recent years as market sentiment has turned against its fatty meat. Learn more about the breed below.

Characteristics of the Angeln Saddleback Pig

The Angeln Saddleback Pig is a large breed of pig. It is usually black in color with a white belt around the body on the front legs. He has droopy ears.

The average size of sows is around 84 cm, that of boars around 92 cm.

Adult Angeln Saddleback sows have an average weight of around 300 kg. And the average live weight of adult boars is about 350 kg. Photos and information from Wikipedia.

Angeln Saddleback pigs are very hardy animals. They are well suited to outdoor cultivation or an extensive pig farming system.

The sows are very prolific and are good mothers. They produce enough milk for their piglets.
