Damascus goat: characteristics, use and complete information about the breed

The Damascus goat is a breed of domestic goat commonly used for milk production. It is mainly grown in Cyprus, Lebanon and Syria. The breed is also known by other names such as Aleppo, Baladi, Chami, raven, Halep Where Shi.

The Damascus goat is a breed that originated in the Middle East and was bred in large herds throughout the region. These goats were exported by the British sometime in the 19th century.

They were brought to Cyprus, where they were later bred and grown in large numbers. It was at this time that the breed was named “Damascus“.

The Damascus goat is mentioned in many classics of Arabic literature. In fact, the breed also features in the region’s religions and folklore.

Due to its nobility and striking characteristics, the Damascene goat has been used to create many other breeds of goats. And there was interest in the breeding and genetics of this goat.

Characteristics of the Damascus Goat

Damascus goats are large in size and are of the Nubian type. They are usually red or brown, but can also be mottled or gray. They usually have long hair. They can be horned or polled.

Adult Damascus goats have long necks and long legs. Their head is relatively small. Like most other goats, Damascus goats are generally larger and heavier than goats.

Special Notes

The Damascus goat is described as noble and having striking features. They are very beautiful and are used in the creation of many other popular breeds of goats. With proper care, females can give birth to three to four babies per stuffing.

They are quite good milk producers. On average, a female can produce up to 1.5 kg of milk per day. Damascus goat’s milk is known to be extremely easy to digest for those who may have difficulty digesting more conventional dairy products.
