Llanwenog Sheep: Characteristics, Origins, Uses & Breed Information

Llanwenog sheep are a breed of domestic meat sheep originating in Wales. It was bred in the 19th century from the Llanlvny, Shropshire, Welsh Highland and Woodland Clun breeds.

These animals are native to the Teifi Valley in West Wales. But since then, the breed has spread to other regions.

The total number of purebred Llanwenog sheep has declined in recent years and it is estimated that less than 2015 breeding sheep have been recorded out of 3000.

And the breed appears regularly at agricultural shows in England and Wales. The association of breeds of these animals was created in 1957.

Today, the breed is grown primarily for meat production. However, for more information about this breed of sheep, read below.

Special Notes

Llanwenog sheep are hardy animals. They are docile in temperament and are known for their extravagance in lambing.

They are easy to handle and have a very calm disposition. They are easy to care for and are well suited for stress-free overwintering when needed.

This has important implications for the health of the animal and its owner. They are generally centenarians and the ewes have very good maternal abilities.

Llanwenog sheep are economical to feed and can be kept in winter. Ewes can be crossed with other breeds if larger carcasses are required.

Lambs grow relatively faster and reach slaughter weight faster. However, see the full breed profile of Llanwenog sheep in the following table.
