Wuchang bream: characteristics, feeding and breeding

The Wuchang bream is a species of cyprinid fish native to the Yangtze basin in China (including Liangtze Lake). It is also found in Newshan and Yuli lakes.

It is a very important component of fish farming and in terms of total production in 2012 it was ranked 12th in the world list of most important fish species for aquaculture.

In 2012, the total production was approximately 0.71 million tons and amounted to US$1.16 billion.

But Wuchang bream populations have declined due to overfishing and reduced reproductive success due to dams.

Characteristics of Wuchang sea bream

Wuchang bream usually has 3 dorsal spines and 7 dorsal soft rays, 3 anal spines and 25-27 anal soft rays.

They are usually black and gray on the back and silvery white on the belly. There are several vertical black stripes on the side.
