Xworth Chicken: Traits, Temperament, and Breed Information

The Xworth chicken is an English breed originating from the village of Ixworth in Suffolk, England. It was designed in the 1930s by Reginald Appleyard and named after the village of Ixworth.

The Xworth chicken was created as a fast growing, high quality meat breed with a reasonable laying capacity. He was bred from White Indian Game, Jubilee, White Minorca, White Orpington and White Sussex chickens.

This is one of the very few chicken breeds that almost disappeared in the 1970s (it has since gradually recovered). There is also a bantam of this breed of chickens.

Xworth Chicken Physical Characteristics

The Xworth hen has pure white plumage. Their skin color is also white. They have a small scallop. The comb, muzzle, earrings and earlobes of the Xworth chicken are bright red. Their shins, legs, beak and flesh are white. Their eyes are red or bright orange.

On average, Ixworth roosters weigh about 3.6-4.1 kg, and chickens – about 2.7-3.2 kg. And the weight of the bantam variety is about 1.02 kg for roosters and about 0.79 kg for chickens. Xworth chickens are highly valued in the market due to their excellent meat quality.

Behaviour/Temperament

The Xworth chicken is a very active and hardy breed. They are excellent in freedom. They will forage most of their food if given free access. It is not a fast growing breed like most other hybrid meat chickens.

They also do well in cold climates. They are very easy to manage, but sometimes aggressive. The hens are very good laying hens, prone to hatching and good nurses. See this chicken breed’s full profile below.
