Gulf Coast Aboriginal Sheep: Characteristics and Breed Information

The native Gulf Coast sheep is a breed of sheep from the United States. It is native to the United States bordering the Gulf Coast.

The breed is also known by other names such as Florida native, Native Pineywoods, Louisiana Scrub or simply Gulf Coast Sheep.

Today, this breed is extremely rare, but very valuable for its ability to adapt to the hot and humid climate of the Gulf Coast.

The native sheep of the Gulf Coast are actually a mixture of many varieties of sheep that inhabited the southern United States during European settlement of the region.

In the 1500s, Spanish sheep first arrived in Florida. The earlier population was mixed with later introductions of Spaniards and other breeds of sheep.

And all of this is happening as a result of strong natural selection under the native range conditions of Florida and other Gulf Coast states.

Today, a remnant of this population has survived and is known as the Gulf CoastFlorida and Louisiana populations are often calledFlorida native‘ as good as ‘Originally from Louisiana‘ respectively.

The exact genetic origin of the native Gulf Coast sheep is unknown, as there was a wide variety of types and breeds of sheep in Spain at the time.

The bloodlines of these animals date back to the original propagation of the churra sheep in the New World in the 15th century by the Spaniards, and later these criollo type sheep were periodically mixed with sheep of the British and French breeds.

Some varieties may also have Tunisian influences. By the mid-20th century, local Gulf Coast sheep provided nearly all of the raw wool in the southern United States.

Currently, native Gulf Coast sheep are listed ascritical‘on the American Livestock Breeds Conservation Organization’s list of conservation priorities. And they are also included in Slow Food’s Ark of Taste in the United States.

Characteristics of Sheep Native to the Gulf Coast

The native Gulf Coast sheep are relatively smaller animals with small bodies and fine bone structure. Their face is generally hairless and their feet are clean.

Their underscores are also clean. They are usually white to dark brown in color. Rams and sheep can be horned or banded.

The native sheep of the Gulf Coast are strong and hardy animals. They are well adapted to the hot and humid climatic conditions of the southeast.

They can produce and raise at least 1 lamb per year without intensive maintenance. And sheep can produce lighter lambs in the same period as other breeds of sheep.

They generally have a higher percentage of live lambs and a better ratio of finished lambs to queens. Sheep typically produce 30% twins, 70% singles, and rarely triplets.

The frequency of multiple births increases with the use of a good diet. The sheep are good mothers and the lambs are strong and grow fast.

In addition to a high degree of adaptation to the local climate, native Gulf Coast sheep have a well-documented resistance to intestinal parasites, hoof rot, and other diseases that commonly affect sheep.

And these valuable traits or performance traits recommended the breed for raising low demand sheep.

This breed is bred primarily for meat production, but has a light coat that can have wool with a 2.5 to 4 inch long shaft.
