Narrow-Grilled Spanish Mackerel: Characteristics and Applications

Characteristics of narrow-trussed Spanish mackerel

The narrowbar Spanish mackerel is the largest of all Australian mackerels. They are usually bright blue to dark gray on the back and sides, fading to a silvery blue-grey on the belly. They have many narrow vertical lines on the sides.

Diet

The king mackerel is a voracious predator. In coastal areas, they feed mainly on larvae and juveniles of small fish and crustaceans.

But their main food consists of small fish with smaller amounts of shrimp and squid.

The narrow-banded Spanish mackerel usually breeds in oceanic conditions on the edges of reefs. Their spawning is seasonal, but prolonged in the warmer waters of the tropics.

Females usually mature around 2 years of age or when they reach a total length of about 80 cm.
