The Welsummer chicken is a Dutch breed developed in the 1900s and named after the village of Welsummer in Holland. This is a large breed of dual purpose chickens.
But the Welsummer breed of chicken was originally bred in the region along the Isel River north of Deventer, Holland. Dutch breeders developed this breed from Cochin Partridge, Wyandotte and Leghorn Partridge, Barnevelder and Rhode Island Red.
This is a large breed of domestic chicken that was included in the American Standard of Excellence in 1991.
The Welsummer chick is mainly popular for producing brightly colored eggs. They are a friendly, light and very intelligent breed of hardy orange and red chickens.
Golden Duckwing, Silver Duckwing and Partridge are the three varieties of the standard Welsammer chicken breed. There is also a variation of this Bantam breed that lays light brown eggs.
Characteristics of Welsummer Chicken
Welsummer chickens have their own physical characteristics and colorations and fit well into the light breed category, although they have a good body size. They are very colorful, have an upright posture with a short, strong beak, a broad back, a full chest and a large, full tail.
The standard color for this breed is red partridge. Welsummer chick piglets are medium in size and have a single small comb. They have yellow skin and shins and almond-shaped red earlobes. The eyes of the Welsummer hen have a reddish tint.
The plumage of a rooster is very different from the plumage of chickens. The Welsummer has a golden brown saddle, head and neck, while the color of the back, forewings and wing curls is bright reddish brown.
But chicken feathers have a noticeably lighter shaft, and each feather on the back is reddish-brown with black dots. There are no feathers in the legs of a Welsammer chicken.
This breed of chicken is considered one of the best free-range foragers of all breeds of laying hens. Hens are very good laying hens. The hens lay large, rich brown terracotta eggs. Walsummer chicks are strong compared to other breeds.
Chickens of this breed have darker spots on their heads and backs than males. Thus, the chickens are easy to distinguish from the flock. On average, an adult Welsh rooster weighs around 2.75 to 3.25 kg and a hen around 2.0 to 2.5 kg.
Behaviour/Temperament
Welsummer chickens are very friendly in nature and very easy to handle. The hens lay large dark brown eggs, often with dark spots. But in winter, the hens lay fewer eggs.
This breed of chickens loves freedom and food for food. But they are also suitable for staying on the run. Chickens will not sit and are not good mothers.
