Undersized Cattle: Characteristics, Uses, and Complete Breed Information

Lowline cattle are a small, versatile breed of cattle. They are relatively smaller than many other breeds of cattle and are often questioned. The Lowline cattle breed was developed by Australian ranchers from black Aberdeen Angus cattle.

The breed was actually developed as part of a major research project started at the Trangi Agricultural Research Center in 1974 to study the effect of selective breeding on growth rate.

85 slow growing cows were initially selected from the Trangi Angus herd to create the original Low Line herd. These 85 cows were tied to yearling bulls. And these yearling bulls were also selected because of the poor growth rate from birth to yearling.

A high growth line or Highline and a randomly selected line or Controline were created at the same time. This unique experimental method was chosen to obtain a rapid variation in growth rates by traditional intra-herd selection in the shortest possible time.

In 1929 the initial stock was imported from Canada, and over the next few years several animals from Scotland and the United States were added. The Lowline cattle herd was then sold to private ranchers when the experiment ended in 1992.

These private breeders have trained Australian Livestock Association. The breed is now bred in many countries such as Australia, Canada, United States, New Zealand, United Kingdom, and China. Learn more about this breed of cattle below.

Weak Cattle Traits

Lowline cattle are small animals. They appear to be dwarfs, but not dwarfs. They are naturally smaller and do not carry the specific dwarfism gene.

These animals were specifically bred for these genetic traits. They are usually black in color and naturally polled. Adult cows weigh on average about 320 kg.

And the average body weight of bulls is about 400 kg. But sometimes bulls and cows can weigh more. Photos and information from Wikipedia.
