Swaledale Sheep: Characteristics, Origins, Uses, and Breed Information

The Souledale sheep is a breed of domestic sheep from the United Kingdom. It was named after the Yorkshire Vale Souledale in England.

The breed is found in the more mountainous regions of the UK. But it is mostly found in the Yorkshire Dales, County Durham and around the Pennines in Cumbria.

The breed is known for its off-white coat, curled horns, and white around the nose and eyes. Currently, the breed is primarily used for lamb/mutton production.

As a breed, the Swaildale sheep is related to the Scottish Blackface and Rough Fell sheep. Both of these breeds are predominant in the UK highlands and are known for their ability to thrive in open areas.

The Scottish Blackface and Rough Fell breeds of sheep originated as separate breeds of sheep before Swaledale.

Along with the Rough Fell, Herdwick and Dalesbred sheep, they are one of three varieties associated with the English Lake District.

The exact origin of the Souledale sheep is unknown. But the breed likely has a non-native, exotic ancestor.

Breed association called ‘Swaledale Sheep Breeders Association‘ was founded in 1919. And the association is an active venue for organizing sales, exhibitions, breeding and Swaledale products.

Characteristics of the Swaledale Sheep

Swaledale sheep are a medium to large breed with a good appearance. They are thick, strong and bold.

It is actually an animal of medium build with black faces marked with bright white around the nose and eyes. Rams and sheep have horns. And their horns are curved, and the horns of rams are much larger.

The wool of the Swaledale sheep is thick and very coarse. Their coat color is considered a uniform white or cream.
