Sevastopol goose: characteristics, origin and information about the breed

The Sevastopol goose is a breed of domestic goose from European Khreylag. It has been claimed that the breed originated in Central Europe along the Danube and the Black Sea.

It is also documented that the birds were originally encountered in Crimea and shipped from the port of Sevastopol, Russia, as the name suggests. And the breed came to England in 1860. In the 19th century, the breed was found in all countries surrounding the Black Sea.

The breed of Sebastopol geese was first exhibited in England under the name ‘Sevastopol goose‘, but they were also called Danube geese. The name “Danubian” was first used for the breed in 1863 in Ireland.

Characteristics of the Sevastopol goose

The Sevastopol goose is a medium-sized breed with long, curly white feathers. It is easily recognizable by its characteristic feathers. The neck feathers are smooth, sometimes greyish-brown.

All gray, fawn and saddle options were also produced by crosses. The feathers can be curly (curly) or smooth on the chest. Their eyes are usually bright blue and their paws and legs are orange.

Their heads are large and rounded, the plumage of the head and upper two-thirds of the neck is normal. Their curled feathers interfere with flight, making them easier to hold.

They require special care because whenever a pet or bird is selected for unusual characteristics, great care must be taken not to lose sight of the vitality and fertility of the breeding stock.

Sebastopol geese need enough water to stay clean. These birds are very hardy and successfully kept in cold climates.

But it is better to provide additional protection in cold, wet and windy weather. Ganders are good, they can be knitted with 1-4 geese. On average, geese can produce about 25-35 eggs per year.
