Rya sheep are a breed of sheep from Sweden. It is also known by other names such as Swedish sheepskin rug Where Ryafar. In fact, it comes from the Norwegian and Swedish breeds of sheep.
The breed also has Norwegian spoolsau heritage. The use of long, wavy and shiny wool for the production of rhya wool was the main purpose of this breed of sheep.
Rya wool is often used to make rugs. Several breeds of long-haired sheep remained in the province of Dalarna, which led to the revival of this breed of sheep in the early 20th century. And in 2000, the stable population was about 2,000 Raya sheep.
Currently, most of the population of this breed lives in northern and central Sweden, and most of the herds are in Dalarna.
At the beginning of the 20th century, long-haired sheep lived in Dalarna and were popular in the region to decorate domestic customers.

Characteristics of the Raya sheep
The Rya sheep is a medium-sized animal. Usually they are white, but black, brown and gray animals are also found in the breed. They have relatively short legs and long, strong, shiny woolly fibers.
Legs, tail, cheek, forehead and crown are glabrous. The wool can be about 6 inches long for a three-month-old lamb. And the length of the wool of an adult Rya sheep can reach 3 inches.
Half of the fleece should be wool, which should be shiny with a well-defined wide curl. Rams and ewes are usually polled and have long tails.
The average height at the withers of adult rams is about 75 cm and that of ewes about 70 cm.
