Romanov sheep: characteristics, use and information about the breed

The Romanov sheep is a breed of domestic sheep originating in Russia. In fact, he was raised in the Upper Volga region (northwest of Moscow) in Russia.

The name of the breed comes from the city of Romanov. For the first time, these animals were seen outside of Russia in the 18th century. Soon they were imported to Germany and then to France.

The Canadian government bought 4 rams and 14 ewes in 1980 and they were quarantined for 5 years. And some of the animals were brought to the United States after being tested.

Characteristics of the Romanov sheep

The Romanov sheep is a medium to large breed of domestic sheep. It is one of the breeds of short-tailed sheep in Northern Europe.

These animals are usually pure black at birth. But as they get older, their body color quickly turns gray. They are usually asked questions.

Romanov sheep are very hardy and strong animals. They are well adapted to the cold inland climate and local diet. They mature quite quickly and reach maturity at the age of 3-4 months.

They can start breeding at any time of the year. Sheep can produce quads, fives, and sometimes even sixes.

These sheep tend to be lambs in one litter, unlike other breeds of sheep which give birth to one or two. Romanov sheep are often crossed with more popular breeds to increase their fertility.

Currently, the breed is grown primarily for meat production, but is also well suited for wool production.

The wool of the Romanov sheep is very strong and ingenious. Their wool is double coated with an average wool fiber diameter of 20.9 micrometers and 71.9 micrometers of outer hair.
