Polypay Sheep: Characteristics, Origins, Uses, and Breed Information

The Polypay sheep is a breed of domestic sheep originating in the United States. It was actually developed in the 1960s at the US Sheep Experiment Station in Dubois, Idaho.

The first crossing took place in 1968. As a result, the bred sheep were bred in 1970.

The name of the breed was created in 1975 from polywhich means several, and pay means return on investment.

The primary goal of Polypay sheep production was to produce more productive sheep for more profit.

The primary objectives of the breed were to create a breed with the desired carcass quality, rapid lamb growth rate, the ability to lamb more than once a year, a high yield of lambs at yearling and a high lifetime fertility.

To obtain this breed, some popular breeds of sheep were used. These popular breeds were the Finnish sheep, the rambouillet, the targi and the dorset.

The Dorset breed has been used for its excellent maternal abilities, carcass quality, long breeding period and early puberty.

The Targi breed was used due to the long breeding season, large body size and wool quality.

The Rambouillet breed was used for its hardiness, adaptability, productivity and quality fleece.

And Finnsheep was used due to early puberty, short pregnancy and high fertility.

The Polypay American Sheep Association was founded in 1980. Today, breeders of this breed of sheep are available in the United States, Mexico and Canada. However, read more about this breed below.
