Call Duck: Characteristics, Origins, Uses, and Full Breed Information

The Call Duck is a breed of domestic duck that resembles other duck breeds, but smaller in size. Goat ducks are mainly bred for decoration and as pets. Previously, they were used for hunting, where their own cries and charlatans lured wild ducks to the hunter’s gun.

Today, this practice has been almost completely replaced by artificial duck calls. The exact origin of the Call duck is unclear. It was most likely available in Asia before arriving in the Netherlands. The first recorded references to this breed come from the Netherlands.

In the Netherlands the Call duck was used as bait and is known as shy Where Bait Duck. Hunters used the duck’s high-pitched call to lure other wild ducks into funnel traps. The breed was first introduced to the British Isles in 1850.

The Call duck was one of the first six waterfowl breeds to be standardized here in 1865. But by the mid-20th century, this breed had become a rarity there.

The gray and white call duck varieties were included in the American Poultry Association’s Standard of Excellence in 1874. And the use of call ducks to hunt wild ducks was permanently banned in all US states. .

However, today Call ducks are mostly kept as pets or for ornamental purposes. They are also popular show birds.
